KRA Denies Plans to Tax Dowry Payments

Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has denied reports of plans to tax dowry payments in Kenya, dismissing the story as 'fake news'. The reports, which surfaced in December 2019, claimed that KRA was considering imposing taxation on dowry payments to boost national revenue.

According to the reports, KRA had allegedly met to discuss and finalize the decision to tax all dowry payments. However, the taxman came out to dismiss the article in a tweet on December 4, 2019, saying 'Hii story hata sisi tumeisikia tu' (We have not even heard of this story).

Several KRA officials took to Twitter to express their amusement at the reports, with one official joking that they were 'smart' for not falling for the fake news. The taxman's denial has put to rest the rumors of plans to tax dowry payments in Kenya.

It is worth noting that the reports of KRA planning to tax dowry payments were published by the same news site, Kenyan Update, which also reported on the fake news of Michael Olunga being offered 600 million euros to denounce his Kenyan citizenship for Japan.
