Heavy Rain Advisory Issued for Kenya

As of December 5, 2019, the Kenya Meteorological Department has issued an advisory warning of heavy rainfall across the country, which is expected to continue throughout the week.

The affected areas include Nairobi, Embu, Meru, Nyeri, Kericho, Narok, Kajiado, Nakuru, as well as other counties such as Elgeyo Marakwet, Kakamega, Uasin Gishu, Machakos, Makueni, Kitui, Nyandarua, Laikipia, Murang’a, Taita Taveta, Kisii, Homa Bay, Kisumu, Siaya, Baringo, West Pokot, and Busia.

Residents in these areas are advised to be on the lookout for potential floods, avoid driving through or walking in moving water or open fields, and not to shelter under trees and near grilled windows to minimize exposure to lightning strikes.

The weatherman has also issued safety tips during flash floods, including avoiding walking or driving through flood water, moving family upstairs or to a high place with a means of escape, and not touching sources of electricity when standing in flood water.

According to the advisory, rains will intensify from Wednesday to Friday before a likely decrease on Saturday, with occasional breaks throughout the month.

Residents are advised to stay informed and follow updates from the Kenya Meteorological Department.
