This archive report was first published on 5 December 2019.

On December 4, 2019, at around 1am, suspected Al Shabaab militants attacked the Diiso area in Garissa County, destroying a communication mast and a diesel generator that powered it.

A nearby security camp retreated as heavily armed militants struck the sleepy village, with loud explosions heard in Garissa town, 40km away.

Initially, reports indicated that 21 officers attached to the camp were missing, but security sources later confirmed that all officers were accounted for.

Garissa County Police Commander Alfred Ongengo led a contingent of security officers to assess the damage and pursue the attackers.

The attackers are believed to have fled towards the Kenya-Somalia border.

This is not the first time Al Shabaab militants have targeted communication masts, disrupting free flow of information in areas near the Kenya-Somalia border.
