Manchester United's Marcus Rashford spoiled Jose Mourinho's return to Old Trafford on Wednesday, scoring twice to secure a 2-1 win over Tottenham and end his former manager's perfect start to his tenure at the London club.
With the win, United leapfrogged Spurs in the Premier League table, moving ahead of their opponents who had gone into the match two points clear after a mini-revival under Mourinho.
Spurs' new boss had replaced the sacked Mauricio Pochettino last month, and his team had made a strong start, winning their first three matches under his leadership.
However, United's impressive first-half performance, marked by energy and adventure, set the tone for the match, and Rashford's 11th goal in his past 13 games for United and England gave the home side the lead in the sixth minute.
Despite some late pressure from Spurs, United held on for the win, with Rashford converting a second-half penalty to restore their lead after Dele Alli's exquisite equaliser.
United's win marked a significant turnaround for the team, who had struggled to find their footing at the start of the season, making their worst start to a season in 31 years.
