Manchester United's search for a new manager has turned to Gareth Southgate, the England boss who has impressed with his stint in charge of the Three Lions.

Southgate's stock has skyrocketed since guiding England to the World Cup semi-finals in 2018, and he is now a man in demand.

However, there may be a hurdle to overcome in the form of a past disagreement between Southgate and Manchester United, who attempted to block his initial move into management in 2006.

Southgate became Middlesbrough boss in 2006, but his appointment was rejected by Manchester United, who were the only top-flight outfit to vote against him.

Despite this, Southgate went on to have a successful spell at Middlesbrough and later moved into the England setup with the U-21 side.

Now, with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer struggling to keep his job at Old Trafford, Manchester United may be tempted to bring in Southgate as his replacement.

But Solskjaer remains confident in his ability to turn things around, saying, "No, it doesn't make me more concerned. I'm just focusing on my job and that's doing as well as I can, look forward to the next game, look long term and plan things with board."
