On December 4, 2019, Egerton University's main campus was indefinitely closed following student protests.
The protests were sparked by the institution's decision to defer students for one year if they did not clear their fee balances.
According to a circular shared by the student council's chairman, Henry Mulyungi, the students demanded that the management allow all students to register for the end of semester examinations and receive exam cards.
Police officers arrived at the institution to disperse the students, leading to teargassing and the students being forced out of the campus into Njoro town.
Following the incident, the university management shut down the institution, ordering all students to vacate the campus by 2:30 pm on the same day.
The decision was made by the Senate at a meeting held on Wednesday, with the registrar of Academic Affairs, Mwanarusi Saidi, signing the notice.
