On December 4, 2019, detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) in Kenya made a significant arrest in the fight against fraud.

A 42-year-old man, identified as Evans Koroso Ratemo, was arrested at Dagoreti corner in Nairobi for masquerading as a relative of Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i.

The suspect had been using a phone number registered on True Caller as 'Evans Matiang'i' to convince unsuspecting members of the public that he could secure government jobs for them.

According to the police, Ratemo had defrauded hundreds of people, mostly young men, out of more than Sh600,000 with false promises of employment in the prison department.

He was arraigned in court on Wednesday, charged with obtaining money by false pretence contrary to section 313 of the penal code.

The suspect claimed to operate in both Kisii and Nairobi counties, leaving a trail of victims in his wake.
