On December 4, 2019, detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) attached to the Serious Crimes Unit arrested Evans Koroso Ratemo, a 42-year-old man who had been masquerading as a relative of Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i.

The arrest took place at Dagoreti corner, where the suspect had been operating.

According to the police, Ratemo had defrauded unsuspecting members of the public of more than Sh600,000 by promising to secure government jobs for them.

He would claim to be able to employ young men in the prison department, deceiving them into believing he had the necessary connections.

‘He was arrested for the offence of obtaining money by false pretence contrary to section 313 of the penal code,’ the DCI stated.

During investigations, it was discovered that Ratemo operated in both Kisii and Nairobi counties, using a phone number registered on True Caller as Evans Matiang’i, which further convinced his victims of his authenticity.

On Wednesday, Ratemo was arraigned in court, facing charges of obtaining money by false pretence.
