On December 4, 2019, President Uhuru Kenyatta announced the appointment of Margaret Nyang'ate Nyakang'o as the new Controller of Budget (CoB) in a Gazette notice.

Ms Nyakang'o was sworn-in on Wednesday, succeeding Agnes Odhiambo, whose tenure ended on August 27, 2019.

Chief Justice David Maraga presided over the ceremony at the Supreme Court building, urging Ms Nyakang'o to uphold the rule of law and the Constitution.

Members of Parliament approved Ms Nyakang'o's nomination on Tuesday, following her vetting last week.

As the new Controller of Budget, Ms Nyakang'o's immediate tasks include investigating why 15 county governments have defaulted on paying suppliers, a circumstance that has prompted the National Treasury to request Parliament to stop transfers.

She will be responsible for managing withdrawals from the public kitty and overseeing devolved units' expenditure, including county governments that have consistently missed their revenue targets since the advent of devolution in 2013.
