On December 4, 2019, the Kenya Private Schools Association (KPSA) called for a redo of the Form One student selection process, citing disenfranchisement of top-performing candidates from private schools.
Nyeri County KPSA coordinator Dionisio Ndegwa expressed concerns that many top-performing candidates from private schools were placed in institutions they did not choose.
"It is not late, let's redo the selection exercise again and let us base it on merit and transparency. Where all the stakeholders are involved and the interests of the children are heard," Mr Ndegwa said.
He also requested that the criteria used during selection be made public and that the list of placements be released to ensure transparency.
According to Mr Ndegwa, the formula used during the Form One selection was not fair, as candidates were not given a level playing ground.
He cited the case of Nelson Wachira, who scored 423 marks and was placed at Barichu Boys High School, a school in Kirinyaga County that he had not selected, instead of his first choice, Alliance High School.
