As health concerns surrounding fast food continue to grow, Kenyan consumers are showing a surprising preference for convenience over nutrition. According to a recent report by Jumia Food Kenya, chicken, pizza, and burger have emerged as the top three most ordered foods online, with chicken taking the lead for the past three years.
Released on Tuesday, the report attributes the high demand for chicken to its affordability, with many restaurants lowering their prices to attract a wider customer base. 'For the last three years, chicken has been the most popular with pizza consistently ranking second in terms of popularity,' said Shreenal Ruparelia, managing director of Jumia East Africa.
Interestingly, the report notes that burger has moved up the ranks, from fifth position in 2017 to third place, as more Kenyans opt for convenience over cooking. 'Consumers are starting to value convenience more and more. They are willing to spend a little bit extra to save time and effort,' says the Jumia Food Index Report 2019.
