Published on December 4, 2019, City Hall had announced plans to double parking fees in Nairobi's Central Business District (CBD), effective December 4th. However, the High Court has since suspended this order.
The suspension follows a case filed by the Consumer Federation of Kenya (Cofek), accusing city hall of issuing a short notice. Cofek argued that citizens would suffer from the increased fees, and that the public was not involved in the making of the bill.
High Court Justice James Makau agreed with Cofek's reasoning, noting that citizens would be negatively impacted by the increased fees. As a result, the judge suspended the order, setting January 21, 2020, as the date for its new hearing.
Motorists in Nairobi will continue to pay the previous parking fee of KSh 200 until the case is heard. The case highlights concerns over the impact of increased parking fees on citizens, particularly during a time when many are struggling to provide basic amenities.
