On December 4, 2019, the Nairobi City County government doubled parking fees within the central business district from Sh200 to Sh400, effective immediately.
However, the High Court has since intervened, temporarily suspending the new parking fees pending the hearing and determination of a case filed by the Consumer Federation of Kenya (Cofek).
High Court Judge James Makau stayed implementation of the announcement by City Hall’s director of parking until the case is heard and determined.
The case is set to be heard on January 21, 2020.
The judge ruled that city residents will suffer the ripple effects of increased fees, making a prima facie case.
City lawyer Henry Kurauka, representing Cofek, argued that consumers were not given sufficient notice by City Hall as required under the law.
