Ruth Matete's life story is a testament to the power of single parenthood. Born to a young mother, Jennifer, who passed away when Matete was just eight years old, she was left in the care of her father, Abel Amunga.
On her wedding day, Matete's father proudly walked her down the aisle, a poignant reminder of the bond they share. In a heartfelt tribute, Matete wrote about her father's influence on her life, saying,
I don’t have memories of my biological mother. I know her name is Jennifer. They were high school sweethearts who had me when they were way too young. Dad says I have her height. She passed away when I was 8 years old. And since then, my dad is who I have known as a father, mother, teacher, coach, friend. A girl who has been raised by a single father is a different kind of girl.
Matete went on to outline the characteristics of children raised by single fathers, highlighting their confidence, strength, and resilience. She noted that they are often headstrong, quick to commit, and not afraid to hurt. Despite the challenges they face, they have enormous hearts and learn to love again.
Matete's tribute to her father is a powerful reminder of the impact that single parents can have on their children's lives. As she said, 'Daddy, you’re my hero. I have waited for this moment for so long and it came to pass. Thank you for being the father you are. I am blessed to call you daddy.'
