Heavy rains have brought destruction and displacement to Kisumu County, with at least 1,000 people forced to flee their homes in Nyando.
Published on December 4, 2019, the floods, which started on Sunday, have spread into villages and marooned houses, causing massive destruction of property.
Residents are camping at Ombaka and Ogenya evacuation centres, with some families seeking refuge at nearby schools.
Leonard Ogola, 73, escaped at night with seven members of his family to the nearby Ombaka Primary School, where 200 other households had sought refuge.
Government spokesman Cyrus Oguna said that 300,000 people have been affected by the ongoing heavy rains, with 17,000 displaced, 132 lives lost, and 11,000 livestock swept away.
The rains are expected to continue until the end of December, with 32 counties affected across the country, mostly in the coastal, western, and northern regions.
Residents of Mosiro in Kajiado West want dykes built in the area removed, saying they had caused flooding in their homes.
Meanwhile, authorities in Upper Makueni confirmed that nine people had died in a span of two weeks from floods-related incidents as rains continue to wreak havoc across Makueni County.
