Published on December 4, 2019, a Homa Bay education lobby group has warned secondary school principals against creating unnecessary levies to hike school fees ahead of Form One students' admission in January.
The Homa Bay County Education Network has expressed concerns over the manner in which some principals have invented unwarranted methods of milking money from parents.
According to Julius Omuga, the network's coordinator, principals who engage in such practices will burden parents with a fee increment of more than 70 per cent if left unchecked.
Omuga cited examples of schools charging exorbitant prices for school uniforms, remedial lessons, and other levies, with one school in Homa Bay charging Sh27,000 for school uniforms alone.
He urged parents to be cautious of school heads who hike school fees and to report cases of unfair fee increments to the Ministry of Education through a free hotline, 0800720940.
