On 3 December 2019, detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations arrested Nandi County Senator Samson Cherargei in relation to incitement claims.
Cherargei was summoned by the DCI in August 2019 over perceived inflammatory remarks he made at a funeral, where he claimed his political wing was allegedly profiling persons opposed to Deputy President William Ruto's presidential bid.
According to the prosecution, Cherargei's words were aimed at stirring ethnic hatred against other communities residing in the area.
He was later released on a personal bond after being interrogated by detectives at the DCI offices in Kisumu.
Senator Cherargei maintained his innocence, saying he didn't intend to propagate any inciting remarks.
He claimed that the statement he made meant that they would meet the people criticising Ruto at the ballot in 2022.
