Government Allocates Ksh 569 Million for Human-Wildlife Conflict Compensation

On December 3, 2019, the government allocated Ksh 569 million for compensation of victims of human-wildlife conflict.

Tourism and Wildlife Cabinet Secretary Najib Balala has strengthened community wildlife conservation committees to clear the backlog of compensation cases at the county level.

According to a report by the ministry of tourism and wildlife, crop raiding is the most common human-wildlife conflict, with 5,000 reported cases.

Attacks on humans stand at 4,500 cases, while reported cases of attacks of marauding wildlife attacking livestock are 3,000.

Secretary Balala assured that the government will compensate all approved cases of victims of human-wildlife conflict.

The government has approved Ksh 1.5 billion for compensation claims between 2014 and 2017.

Secretary Balala emphasized the need for sustained and collaborative strategies to mitigate human-wildlife conflicts.
