On December 3, 2019, the Kenya Civil Aviation Authority (KCAA) led a historic multi-agency search and rescue drill, evaluating Kenya's readiness to respond to aviation emergencies.

Participating agencies included the Kenya Defence Forces, National Police Service, Kenya Meteorological Department, Ministry of Health, Kenya Airways, KCAA, and the National Disaster Operations Centre.

The Okoa Maisha Asarex 2019 drill, which took a year to plan, aimed to identify gaps in the search and rescue system, enhance response speed, and improve reliability.

According to KCAA Director-General Gilbert M. Kibe, the exercise aimed to gauge the preparedness of government agencies in responding to aviation incidents and improve response time in search and rescue missions.
