16 Killed in Sudan Factory Fire ¶
On December 3, 2019, a massive fire broke out at a tile manufacturing unit in an industrial zone in north Khartoum, Sudan, sending thick plumes of black smoke into the sky.
Police quickly cordoned off the area, as reported by an AFP correspondent at the scene.
According to a doctors' committee linked to Sudan's protest movement, at least 16 people lost their lives and over 90 were injured in the blaze.
The casualties were rushed to several hospitals in the capital, with the doctors' committee urging off-duty medical professionals to assist with the emergency response.
State television reported significant losses of life and property, but the cause of the explosion remains unclear.
"The explosion was loud. Several cars parked in the factory compound also caught fire," an employee of an adjacent factory recounted to AFP.
