On 22nd February next year, Meru County will host its inaugural Mt. Kenya Mountain Running Championship, a unique sporting event that aims to raise funds for cancer treatment, environmental conservation, and promote the region as a tourist and investment hub.

Speaking during the event launch, Meru Governor Kiraitu Murungi said the championship will offer participants a chance to challenge the heights of Mt. Kenya while raising funds to address the cancer scourge in the county and foster environmental conservation.

"The Mt. Kenya Mountain Running Championships is a great way for participants to combine passion for sport, test boundaries, and have fun," said Governor Kiraitu, appealing for corporate sponsorships.

The championship, which targets to attract 5,000 participants and spectators, will feature four races: a 2km family fun run, 6km and 8km junior run, and a 12km elites' race through the challenging Mount Kenya forest tracks.

Proceeds from the championships will be used to fund the establishment of the Meru Cancer Centre at the local Level 5 Hospital and a sanctuary for the mountain bongo and rhinos.

The elite winner of the 12KM race category will take home 500,000 shillings, while the runner-up will take home 250,000 shillings, and the second runner-up will take home 100,000 shillings.
