On December 3, 2019, Tharaka Nithi County Commissioner Beverly Opwora announced plans to partner with Chuka University to achieve 10% forest cover in the county.

The initiative aims to make Tharaka Nithi a green zone through a sustainable programme of tree planting throughout the county.

Ms. Opwora emphasized the importance of diversifying tree varieties to include avocado, mangoes, and other fruit-bearing vegetation, citing the benefits of environmental conservation and the Big Four Agenda.

Chuka University Vice Chancellor Professor Erastus Njoka echoed Ms. Opwora's sentiments, highlighting the need to plant medicinal trees to support the health care component of the Big Four Agenda.

The university plans to work with the government and non-governmental organizations to ensure the county becomes a green zone before expanding to other areas.

Professor Njoka also urged youth and women groups to collaborate with the university, incorporating them in its programmes to enhance their impact in social and economic development of Tharaka Nithi County.
