On December 3, 2019, the marking of the KCSE business studies paper was thrown into chaos as examiners declined to participate due to poor working conditions and low pay.

The examiners, numbering over 700, were unhappy with the pay of Sh46 per script, which was lower than the Sh68 they had demanded.

Additionally, some examiners were forced to sleep on the floor, further exacerbating the situation.

After a meeting with the Kenya National Examination Council (Knec) on Tuesday, the examiners agreed to continue marking, but only after the council agreed to increase their pay to Sh52 per script.

Knec Chief Executive Officer Mercy Karogo stated that the issue had been resolved, but the Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (Kuppet) Secretary-General, Akelo Misori, expressed regret over the treatment of the examiners.

Misori noted that teachers marking other papers were being paid well, and that the examiners deserved better working conditions.
