On December 2, 2019, the County Director of Parking Services, Tom Tinega, announced a significant increase in parking fees in Nairobi, effective from December 4, 2019.

The new rates are aimed at discouraging motorists from entering the Central Business District (CBD) and reducing congestion, according to officials from Governor Mike Sonko's administration.

The parking fees will be categorized into three zones: the City Centre and Kijabe, which will attract the highest parking rates of Ksh.400 per day; commercial centres like Westlands, Upperhill, and Ngara, which will be charged Ksh.200 per day; and all other commercial centres, which will pay Ksh.100 per day.

Private vehicle owners will be required to pay Ksh.7,000 for a seasonal parking ticket of one month, Ksh.18,000 for three months, Ksh.32,000 for six months, and Ksh.55,000 for one year.

According to the notice, motorists will be required to top up the fee payment if they migrate to a zone with a higher charge.
