On December 1, 2019, Maseno University's Senate made a decision to close the institution indefinitely due to student unrest.

The decision was made after students failed to engage the university administration in structured discussions regarding alleged rape cases reported in off-campus student residences.

According to an internal memo by Vice Chancellor Professor Julius Nyabundi, the Senate resolved to close the university following the unrest and the students' failure to engage in structured discussions.

The notice directed all students to vacate the university premises by 7:30 pm on the same day.

On Sunday evening, students took to the streets over what they said was runaway insecurity, blocking the Kisumu-Busia road, lighting bonfires, and pelting motorists with stones.
