As of December 4th, 2019, motorists parking their cars in Nairobi's central business district will have to dig deeper into their pockets due to a recent hike in parking fees announced by the County Government.

The new fees, which are a result of the Finance Act 2019, will see private car owners pay Sh400 daily to park in the CBD, a 100 percent increase from the previous fee of Sh200. Buses not classified as public service vehicles will be charged Sh1,000 per day.

According to County Director of Parking Services Tom Tinega, the new rates are aimed at boosting revenue. The notice, issued on December 2nd, 2019, also outlined the fees for other commercial centers, categorized as Zone 2, which include Westlands, Upperhill, and others.

Motorists parking in commercial centers not listed under Zone 1 and Zone 2 will be charged Sh100. The new fees also include a monthly parking ticket system, with private car owners paying up to Sh55,000 per year.

“Kindly note that you will be required to top up the parking fee payment if migrating to a zone with a higher charge as will be applicable,” reads the notice.
