Belinda Wanjiru, a 9-year-old Kenyan golfer, has made headlines in the golfing world with her impressive skills on the course. She has been nominated for the most promising girl award at the SOYA Awards alongside Harambee Starlets' Gentrix Shikanga.
Wanjiru's journey in golf began at the age of four, and she quickly made a name for herself in the sport. In January, she represented her school in the Banda Trophy nine-hole event at Karen Country Club, where she emerged victorious with a score of 20 stable Ford points.
Her impressive performance did not go unnoticed, and she went on to win the nett winner title at the Sigona Ladies Open on February 16, also scooping the bronze medal as the gross winner.
Shikanga, on the other hand, is a talented Vihiga Queens striker who has captured the imagination of many with her scoring antics. She led Harambee Starlets to the Council of East and Central Africa Football Associations (CECAFA) Women Championships title by beating hosts Tanzania 2-0 in the final.
Other nominees for the most promising girl award include University of Nairobi's Dynamites player Faith Atieno and Africa under 20 women 400m champion Mary Moraa.
