On 2 December 2017, Kenya kicked off their Copa Coca Cola Africa title defence with a disappointing loss to Zimbabwe in the opening match at the Mpesa Foundation Academy in Thika.

Kenya's opponents, Zimbabwe, took the lead in the 31st minute through Luke Musiriki's goal. However, Kenya managed to equalize just before halftime through Captain Marcus Odhiambo's strike.

But Zimbabwe's Luke Musiriki was not done yet, scoring two more goals in the 51st and 58th minutes to secure a perfect start for his team in the continental event.

Kenya will face Mozambique in their next match, while Zimbabwe will take on Mozambique.

The Copa Coca Cola event has attracted 12 teams from across Africa, including Tanzania, South Africa, Zambia, Ethiopia, Namibia, Uganda, Burkina Faso, Angola, and Botswana.

Kenya's Sports Cabinet Secretary, Amina Mohammed, accompanied by Education Cabinet Secretary Prof. George Magoha and Prof. Margret Kobia from the Youth and Gender docket, attended the event and emphasized the importance of the continental competition in providing a platform for youths to showcase their talents.
