December 2, 2019 - A government directive aimed at streamlining operations at the Mombasa port has had an unintended consequence for seed importers in Kenya.
According to the Seed Trade Association of Kenya (STAK), the directive has led to significant delays in the inspection and clearing of consignments, resulting in demurrage costs running into millions of shillings.
STAK chairman Kassim Owino stated that seed importers are incurring costs due to delayed inspection and clearing, with multinational firms threatening to leave the market due to the delays.
European exporters and French firm Technoserve are among those considering leaving the Kenyan market due to the delays.
