On December 2, 2019, the World Food Program (WFP) received a significant boost to its efforts in Kenya, courtesy of a $1 million voluntary contribution from the government of Russia.
The donation, which is part of Russia's commitment to cooperate with the African nation in the post-Russia-Africa summit in Sochi, will be used to distribute food supplies to communities in dire need.
According to the WFP, 3.1 million Kenyans are considered food insecure following prolonged drought experienced earlier in the year, making this donation a timely intervention.
Ambassador of the Russian Federation noted that the humanitarian aid contributes to Kenya's quest for food security under the big four agenda.
UN resident coordinator for Kenya, Mr Siddharth Chatterjee, welcomed the food supplies, saying it reiterates the commitment to alleviate suffering from hunger.
He pledged support for the government and all its partners to transform the country into a food-basket, with the UN Kenya Team continuing to deliver the supplies.
