This archive report was first published on 2 December 2019.

On November 21, 2019, the body of Eric Oloo, a journalist for The Star, was discovered in the home of Chief Inspector of Police Sabina Kerubo in Siaya. The gruesome murder sparked a thorough investigation, which led to Kerubo's arraignment before Siaya Principal Magistrate James On'gondo on December 2, 2019.

Although Kerubo was not required to take a plea, she was directed to remain in custody at Siaya Police Station for 14 days. The detectives handling the case, led by Chief Inspector Tobias Akumu, requested additional time to conclude their investigations and tabled a sworn affidavit before the magistrate.

According to Akumu, the detectives intend to hand over the case file to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecution (ODPP) on December 3, 2019 with their recommendations. If the State counsel directs that Kerubo be charged alongside the other two suspects already in police custody, the detectives will proceed accordingly.

Two brothers, Victor Ogola Luta and Franklin Joel Luta, who were arrested on November 21 and 22, respectively, are also being held pending investigations. They will be arraigned on December 10, 2019 to face murder charges.

Leaders from the region, including MPs Opiyo Wandayi (Ugunja) and David Ochieng (Ugenya), have called for a speedy conclusion of the investigation so that those behind the gruesome murder of the journalist can be brought to book.
