On November 17, a disturbing incident occurred in Gikomba market, Kariobangi North Estate, where a pregnant woman was assaulted by a hawker over a Sh200 debt.

Asiko Mutubwa, a pregnant mother, was allegedly punched in the belly and had her hair violently pulled by Rosemary Alungwa, a 46-year-old hawker, who had given her a skirt valued at Sh200 to be paid in instalments.

According to court papers, Alungwa went to Mutubwa's home to demand payment, where the assault occurred. The papers state that Alungwa 'grabbed the complainant, shook and plucked her plaited hair causing injury to her scalp. She further punched her belly despite the fact that she is pregnant.'

Concerned neighbours intervened to rescue Mutubwa from Alungwa's 'visibly physical and violent' assault.

Mutubwa sought treatment before reporting the incident to the police.

Alungwa denied the assault, claiming that she was 'fixed by the complainant after politely asking for my money.'

The court granted Alungwa a cash bail of Sh 5,000 pending hearing of the case on March 19 next year.
