On Sunday, Butali Sugar Warriors and Blazers were crowned champions of the Kenya Hockey Union (KHU) men and women's leagues, respectively, after completing unbeaten campaigns.
Butali Sugar Warriors overcame Greensharks 4-2, with Amos Barkibir scoring a hat-trick, to wrap up another dominant season, winning 15 of 18 matches.
George Mutira added the other goal for Butali, while Chris Wokila scored a double for Greensharks.
Butali coach David Owaka praised his team's success, attributing it to the recruitment of 'new, young and vibrant players.' He also promised that the team would work on penalty shots and allow senior players to step aside to allow young players to participate fully.
“Next season we are going to work on our penalty shots as we defend and keep the trail. Moreover, we will allow our senior players to step aside to allow out young players participate fully,” said Owaka.
Blazers, on the other hand, bagged 38 straight points to seal their win, recording a total of nine clean sheets and winning all 12 matches.
Blazers Assistant Coach Josephine Ataro attributed the team's success to the unity in the club, saying that no player had left the club, and that they would work on improving their short corners next season.
Ataro explained, “That togetherness in our club has made us win the title always. No player has left the club. I am so happy the girls worked hard,”
This season's runners-up were Wazalendo Hockey Club and USIU women.
