The University of Nairobi (UoN) council has made the decision to scrap the parallel degree courses unit, citing declining student numbers as the reason.

According to a report by the Business Daily, published on December 2, 2019, the university's council has revoked the Statute XXXV, which established the Centre for Executive Education and Short-term programmes (CESSP), with immediate effect.

Prof Ojiambo, a university official, stated that all functions under CESSP would now be handled by other competent UoN organs, and directed staff serving under the CESSP to be redeployed and assigned duties in line with their training.

The university faces stiff competition from other higher learning institutions that have received charters in recent years, leading to reduced intake in self-sponsored programmes.

Despite a rebound in student numbers last year, from 67,957 to 70,515, the university's council has decided to scrap the parallel degree courses unit to ensure seamless delivery of university functions and services.
