On December 2, 2019, a tragic incident occurred at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) when a senior detective collapsed and died shortly after landing from Japan.
Chief Inspector Monica Wambui Githaiga, a seasoned investigator, had been on a short course in Japan with her colleagues. However, her journey took a devastating turn when she began complaining of chest pains shortly after arriving at JKIA's Terminal 1E aboard Ethiopian Airlines flight ET 719.
Despite receiving treatment at the Port Health Clinic, Wambui sadly passed away. Her colleagues revealed that she had also fallen ill during their transit in Dubai, where she was treated at the airport's medical facility and allowed to continue with the journey.
Wambui's body was taken to Chiromo Mortuary for a postmortem examination. The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has launched an investigation to determine the cause of her death.
At the time of her death, Wambui was the lead investigator in the January 15, 2019, Dusit D2 terrorist attack in Nairobi, which claimed the lives of 21 people.
