On December 1, 2019, Britam announced a partnership with World Vision to insure water projects in rural Kenya, ensuring continuity of humanitarian efforts and improving water access for local communities.
Under the deal, Britam will finance repairs of water pumps, borehole equipment, and generators installed by World Vision, protecting local communities from the high cost of repairs.
World Vision's Director for Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene in Kenya, Enock Oruko, explained that the insurance cover would cushion local communities from the financial burden of repairing machines like pumps and generators.
The insurance premiums will be calculated at 0.75 percent of the total amount of the insured components of the water source, with a minimum charge of Sh15,000.
Rural communities will fund the insurance through revenues collected by water user committees, who manage boreholes and sell water on behalf of the communities they serve.
Britam has already secured four communities in Nakuru, serving over 6,000 people, under the insurance cover.
