On December 1, 2019, a disturbing incident shook the Maseno University community when two women were allegedly raped and one beaten by an armed gang that broke into a house where they were with a colleague.

The third woman resisted the attackers and was severely beaten, while the gang also stole from a neighboring house.

Students took to Twitter to express their outrage and demand action from the authorities, using the hashtag #Masenolivesmatter.

They shared harrowing accounts of how they narrowly escaped death after being chased by people wielding pangas from the neighboring community.

The students accused the institution of being a 'slaughterhouse' and blamed the police for failing to take action in the face of life-threatening scenarios.
