On December 1, 2019, police in Eldoret, Uasin Gishu County, arrested a 65-year-old man over claims of eloping with a 14-year-old girl from Kakamega.

The suspect is currently being held at Eldoret Central Police Station as police continue their investigations.

Uasin Gishu County Police Commander, Johnstone Ipaara, confirmed the incident, stating that police are working with the Children Department to investigate the matter.

‘The matter is now recorded in the Children Department and the suspect will be presented in court on Monday,’ Ipaara said.

According to children's rights advocate Kerubo Makroti, the teen was allegedly held captive by the elderly man.

Uasin Gishu's Children's Officer, Dian Jeruto, said the minor was taken to the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital for a medical examination.

Police and the children department are working together to locate the parents of the teen.

‘We are working with the Kakamega County Children Department to trace her parents,’ Jeruto said.
