Heavy rains pounded Nairobi and its environs on Saturday night, causing the city's drainage system to be severely overstretched.

According to the Kenya Meteorological Department, most parts of the country can expect to experience heavy downpours in the coming days.

On Saturday night, several roads in Nairobi were flooded, with the most affected areas being Wetlands, South C, Thika Road, Parklands, and Kilimani.

On Sunday, the Kenya Red Cross issued a warning to motorists to exercise extreme caution due to the flooded roads.

"A section of Thika Superhighway road between NYS headquarters and Muthaiga Police Station is flooded due to heavy rains experienced overnight. Motorists are advised to avoid using the service lane and exercise caution along the route," the Kenya Red Cross stated.

Meanwhile, in Voi, four villages were marooned after the Voi River burst its banks, prompting rescue efforts by the Kenya Red Cross.

On Sunday morning, the team rescued over 100 people at Msambweni and 500 others at Tanzania informal settlement in Voi Town, with rescue efforts ongoing in other areas.

Additionally, a 35-year-old man was swept away while attempting to cross the Kaiti River in Makueni and was rushed to a local health facility for treatment.
