On November 29, Unai Emery was sacked as Arsenal boss after a series of disappointing results, with Freddie Ljungberg taking over on an interim basis.

According to reports, Arsenal chiefs have identified Mikel Arteta, Pep Guardiola's assistant at Manchester City, as their top target to replace Emery.

Arteta, a former Arsenal captain, has been linked with the job since Arsene Wenger's exit in 2018, but former chief executive Ivan Gazidis preferred Emery at the time.

However, with Emery's tenure marked by underwhelming performances, the Arsenal board is now understood to be keen on Arteta, who is reportedly open to the opportunity.

Guardiola is also said to be willing to allow Arteta to leave Manchester City to advance his career.

Arteta's name has been added to a list of potential managers that also includes sacked Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino, Brendan Rodgers, Max Allegri, Patrick Vieira, and Nuno Espirito Santo.
