On a typical week, the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) would have been the talk of the town in Kenya. However, a Christian pastor's wife, Pastor twa twa, stole the spotlight with her candid discussion of marital sex at a Christian Couples' Seminar.
According to eyewitnesses, Pastor twa twa's mode of delivery was comical yet effective, using facial expressions and her now-famous phrase 'twa twa' to convey her message. The pastor and her husband soon found themselves on local TV stations, displacing BBI from top of mind awareness among Kenyans.
Kenya's reaction to Pastor twa twa's comments is not surprising, given the country's reputation as the sexual prude of the region. Neighboring countries like Uganda and Tanzania have long been known for their open discussions of sex, with Ugandans having their 'sengas' and Tanzanians having their 'aunties' who dispense racy sexual advice to young couples.
However, Pastor twa twa's comments have challenged this perception, showing that Kenyan women can take the lead in matters of sex and have a view on how and where things risqué can happen. Her unorthodox approach to discussing sex has also made her an unlikely ambassador for marital sex, as she appears to be more like a Home Economics teacher than a sex expert.
Despite initial shock, Pastor twa twa's comments have sparked a much-needed conversation about sex in Kenya. Her comments have also raised questions about the role of religion in discussing sex, with some wondering if the 'twa twa' conversation will replace the prosperity Gospel in the coming days.
