Five Hair Mistakes to Avoid for Healthy Locks

Published on December 1, 2019

Good hair is a mood by itself, and we all strive to have beautiful hair because it somewhat has an effect on your self-esteem. However, despite doing everything right, you can still find that it's breaking rapidly and becoming brittle. There are many things that we are still learning when it comes to hair care.

The most important thing is identifying the right steps to take so that our hair can be healthy. One of the most common mistakes people make is over-washing their hair, which can strip it of its natural oils and protective layers. Depending on your hair type, regulate the number of times you wash in a month in order to keep it protected.

Another mistake is drying your hair too vigorously, which can cause friction and lead to breakage. When the hair follicles are under friction, they end up breaking. Furthermore, wet hair is very delicate so gentle drying is necessary. Pat-dry your hair with a soft towel or a cotton t-shirt, as cotton shirts are preferred because they don’t absorb too much moisture or damage the cuticles while drying your hair.

Stylists and braiders might have even convinced you of tight braids in order for the style to last longer, but many people are on the verge of traction alopecia due to these tight hairdos and updos. Honestly, it would be much better to have a hairstyle that lasts a short period of time but protects your follicles. The correct way to comb hair is by first running through the strands with your fingers to get rid of knots, and then gently combing from the roots to the ends.

Using the wrong pillowcase can also cause friction between the pillow surface and the hair follicles and cuticles, which can result in dry hair. The best pillowcases are those that are made of satin or silk because the smooth and soft surface keeps your hair protected and helps it retain moisture. For this, it is advisable to replace cotton pillowcases with silk or satin ones in order to allow your hair to thrive.
