On Sunday, First Lady Margaret Kenyatta will preside over World AIDS Day celebrations at Gusii Stadium in Kisii County, marking the occasion with the theme 'Towards Universal Health Coverage: Communities united for a HIV Free Generation.'
As part of the celebrations, the First Lady will launch the county's elimination of mother-to-child transmission of HIV in eight counties across the country.
World AIDS Day 2019 highlights the crucial role of communities in the AIDS response, recognizing the invaluable contributions of communities of people living with HIV, key populations, and community-led organizations.
According to the World AIDS Day theme, communities are the lifeblood of an effective AIDS response and an important pillar of support, leading and supporting the delivery of HIV services, defending human rights, and supporting their peers.
Despite significant strides made against the epidemic in Kenya, with new infections dropping by 50% and AIDS-related deaths by 30% over the last 9 years, stigma remains high, and new infections among young people remain equally high.
As the world marks World AIDS Day 2019, there is a need to recommit and increase investments in impactful programs to deliver on HIV and end AIDS by 2030.
