Published on December 1, 2019, green peas have been a staple in many Kenyan households. Botanically, pea pods are fruit, containing seeds and developing from the ovary of a flower.

Rich in protein, vitamins, and minerals, green peas are an excellent addition to a balanced diet. They are low in carbs and packed with nutrients like Vitamin A, C, and K, as well as minerals such as potassium, magnesium, and calcium.

These nutrients may help prevent high blood pressure, a risk factor in heart diseases. Vitamin K and manganese found in green peas are also great for bone building, with a recommended daily intake of three grammes, equivalent to a cup of peas.

Green peas are widely available in Kenya, from supermarkets to vegetable vendors and markets. Prices vary depending on the location, ranging from Sh10 per glass (shelled) to Sh400 per kilo at upmarket grocery shops. A 90kg bag at the market can cost around Sh10,000.
