December 1, 2019, marked the beginning of a new era in African development as American-Senegalese singer Aliaume Damala Badara Akon Thiam, better known as Akon, started building his futuristic city in Africa.

The city, dubbed Akon City, is a 2,000-acre project that will be built on land given by Senegalese President Macky Sall, just a short drive from Dakar, the capital city of Senegal.

According to Akon, the city will be a 100% crypto-based city, with its own air terminal for residents and tourists to fly in and out, and will focus on renewable energy, particularly solar power.

"It's Akon City. It's all renewable, the Akon-tainment solar city. A real physical place, it's going to have a real airport," Akon said in a recent interview with Nick Cannon.

The city is expected to take 10 years to build, with construction starting in March this year and stage two scheduled for completion in 2025.
