Published on December 1, 2019, the Kenya Civil Aviation Authority (KCAA) has revealed plans to increase oversight in the air transport sector.
The regulator has come under scrutiny due to issues surrounding the quality of air services, with recent plane accidents raising safety concerns.
According to KCAA Director General Gilbert Kibe, the authority requires at least 300 new employees to meet its oversight needs.
The new staff will include safety inspectors, airworthiness flight operations and licensing personnel, mechanics, and air traffic control officers.
The authority is also reviewing and reorganizing its structure to enhance its capacity and better position itself to oversee the expanding aviation industry.
Recent data shows the aviation sector is growing, with the air transport sector growing by 7.8 per cent in 2018 from 5.4 per cent the previous year.
Passenger numbers also witnessed a growth of 9.5 per cent to reach 12.073 million in the 2018/19 financial year.
