On November 29, 2019, Florence Makau boarded the Mombasa-Nairobi train, which was operated by the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) in Kenya. The train was traveling from Mombasa to Nairobi when the incident occurred.

According to her sister, Damaris Makau, Florence felt dizzy and nauseated when the train was approaching Kibwezi town. The train crew made an emergency stop, and it was agreed that Florence be rushed to the nearby Kibwezi sub-county hospital.

Medical examinations confirmed that Florence had high blood sugar levels and her blood pressure had significantly dropped. The medics at the hospital advised that she be admitted for further medical assessment, but it was already late as she took her last breath later in the evening.

On November 30, 2019, the incident was reported, and the news was shared on social media platforms.
