Published on November 30, 2019, a landslide in Kilungu area, Makueni, has resulted in the loss of two lives and displaced several families.
Makueni Police Commander Joseph Ole Napeiyan confirmed the incident but declined to provide further details.
According to Kilungu Ward MCA Patrick Mbevi, over 20 families have been affected by the disaster.
The incident is a stark reminder of the devastating effects of landslides in the region, with a similar incident occurring in April last year when River Muuoni burst its banks, leaving over 30 families homeless.
Additionally, the Kikuu River in Nzaui sub-county also burst its banks, causing transport disruptions along the Wote-Makindu Road.
Motorists were stuck on both sides of the road at Kiangini Bridge for several hours, prompting authorities to advise those approaching the area to use alternative routes.
During the same period, five families were left homeless after Muoni River burst its banks and flooded their houses in Wolwa location.
Some residents were forced to climb trees to save themselves from the rising waters.
Patrick Mbevi had appealed to the government and humanitarian agencies to provide urgent assistance to the affected families.
Later, the Kenya Red Cross made an emergency appeal for Ksh. 500 million to support families affected by the floods.
Notably, a report by the humanitarian agency revealed that over 100 people were killed following flash floods across the country that year.
