On November 30, 2019, Petroleum and Mining CS John Munyes appointed Dr. Macharia Irungu as the new Managing Director at Kenya Pipeline Company (KPC).

Dr. Macharia Irungu brings a wealth of experience to the role, having previously served as the Managing Director of the Gulf Africa Petroleum Corporation, a member of the Total Group, and as a Strategy Director at Total Kenya Limited.

He holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Chemistry from the University of Nairobi, a Master of Business Management Degree from the National University – USA, and a Doctor of Philosophy in Strategic Management from the University of Nairobi.

Dr. Macharia Irungu is also a member of several professional organizations, including the America Chamber of Commerce, Kenya Hospital Association, British Business Association, Institute of Directors, and the Kenya Institute of Management.

The appointment follows a rigorous recruitment process conducted by the KPC board of Directors, with officials from the Public Service Commission closely observing the process. The Board received 88 applicants for the position and interviewed a final shortlist of 9.

Dr. Macharia Irungu replaces Joe Sang, who resigned earlier this year over the loss of 21 million litres of fuel valued at about Sh2 billion. Hudson Andambi has been acting MD since December 2018.

Kenya Pipeline Company is a state corporation responsible for transporting, storing, and delivering petroleum products to consumers in Kenya through its pipeline system and oil depot network.
