This archive report was first published on 30 November 2019.

On November 30, 2019, a multi-agency raid led by detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) and the Anti-Counterfeit Agency (ACA) resulted in the arrest of a suspect and the seizure of two motor vehicles.

The operation targeted the Swift Gas Refilling Plant in Syokimau along Mombasa road, where approximately 600 empty gas cylinders of different brands and companies were found.

According to the DCI, the seized vehicles included a Mitsubishi lorry (Registration Number KCB 597S) and a Toyota Caldina (Registration Number KBG 141V), which were carrying the gas cylinders.

The government had previously threatened to abolish rules that enabled an exchange pool created in 2009, which allowed consumers to trade their gas cylinders at any outlet without regard to the brand of their cylinder.

However, this regulation had the unintended consequence of increasing the illegal trade of Liquefied Petroleum Gas.
